He is now in the fourth grade. You should feel extremely fortunate to have students attend Northridge Elementary. My son had Mrs. Smith in Kindergarten. She took the time to come to each of the childrens homes individually to get to know the parents of the children before school started. That is so unusual, anywhere, for a teacher to be so involved. The music program is exceptional, and includes an orchestra. There is also an 'art club' which meets after school. Love the home reading program (English and Spanish Immersion.) Teachers morale is better this year. I'm amazed at the dedication of the parents to this school. Volunteer hours are off the charts. Daughter is in chorus this year and really enjoys it. Mr. Welch is such an awesome upper-grade computer teacher. Unfortunately, poor leadership from and communication with the current principal is very evident both with us parents and faculty and is a great detriment to the school. Morale is very low and not only parents notice but the children too. What a shame! Discipline problems, issues with the Spanish Immersion program and other topics have been badly handled by the principal unfortunately. Our boys have learned so much from Ms. Smith and she is always willing to stay after regular school hours to help a student with a problem. She makes the kids tow the line but is extremely fair when they choose to participate. Faculty morale is low as a result. The upper grade class sizes are too big 40+. There is no Social Studies in lower grades and no art in upper grades. The music program is great, but really it is a high school program run in an elementary school. The chorus is audition only. Other basic academic subjects, particularly math and the resource program are the price paid in order to protect the school's specialty programs, especially music--the key program upon which Northridge bases its reputation. The Spanish Immersion program has been running against district guidelines in the 1st grade.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 5 2004-05-15 “We purchased our home based on its location within Northridge bourdaries, as has many parents locally. Don't let the larger class size fool you. . .This school is on extended day, which allows for more money into the school to pay for aids and activities. School has excellent chorus/orchestra program, Spanish Immersion program, ballroom dancing, a very active PTA. Only flaws are the Investigations math program, which is not indigenous to Northridge, but has been implemented district-wide. Also, the LD/Resource programs are still in their 'building years', to borrow from a sports analogy. Five years ago, their resource program was non-existent. It is actually leaving students behind in math. A new math program needs to be adopted by the school district. Not much help is given to students who need it in math. The Music program, however, is excellent.”
