Brigham Young University Cougars
A total of 51 cases of coronavirus have been linked to the Brigham Young University campus, according to the New York Times. One spot ahead of BYU is Utah State, which has reported 52 cases, according to the Times, and the Cougars have the second-most cases in St. John's County, Utah, behind the University of Utah. St. John's, one of the largest medical schools in the country, has closed its medical school since mid-March because of a Cor-Onavir pandemic.
In 1932, the Cougars set an 8-1 record and outscored their opponents 188-50 in the regular season, which is still one of the school's best season records. Along with 11 consecutive wins that ended the 1983 season and a 14-0 record in 1984, BYU ended the 1984 championship with a 24-game winning streak. BYU was elected national champion for the second time in three years and was the top team in every NCAA poll, endorsed by the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of America.
After receiving official recognition, the Cougars' hockey team began representing their school by wearing the BYU logo on their uniforms and jerseys for the first time since its inception as a University of Utah rival. Recently, BYU started playing Boise State, which ignited an emerging rivalry with them. With the final match in Conference Play on Wednesday, December 23 against Utah State in the final regular-season game at the Marriott Center in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young seems ready to compete for a big contest.
It's unlikely the Cougars will be wild here against Wisconsin, but the game is in Provo, Utah, and it's a great opportunity for both teams.
The Cougars began a collegiate football competition in 1922 and won their first conference title, the first in school history, in 1984. BYU usually plays its home games at South Field, but the team has not played a home game since head coach LaVell Edwards was named the nation's first national champion coach. BYU will be led by head coach Steve St. Pierre in 2018 and this season culminated in quarterback Ty Detmer became one of the best quarterbacks in college football history and the best quarterback in the nation. The Cougars managed their first win against a top team when they beat the Miami Hurricanes earlier in the season.
The following year, the Cougars improved to 5-6 and it would be the first loss in the program's history and the worst in school history. Detmer also didn't forget to coach coach Zach Wilson, who led the Cougars to a victory over UCF in a Boca Raton Bowl in 2020.
When Nike, the team's uniform supplier, said that this couldn't possibly change in just five months, he called and asked them to help him find the new Cougar coach. BYU originally offered the job to Utah defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham, who played for Edwards in the late 1970s. When Whitsham decided instead to become Utah's head coach, the Cougars offered it again, this time to BYU defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall, which he accepted. He was forced to resign and called Detmer when he said he needed to make the change.
Kalani Sitake said of his signing: 'As players we gave him everything, as players. Although BYU has not had its own swimming pool since the 1920s, the university's swimming team has been successful in recent years.
The BYU Athletics Department established its gymnastics program in the 1920s with the help of the BYU Athletics Department and the US Olympic Committee. Gymnastics has been around at BYU for decades, winning league titles as far back as 1911. In 1961, Eldon "Phantom Fortie" became the first American to play at the school, and in 1962, BYU entered the Western Athletic Conference. BYU earned the nickname "Quarterback U" because it consistently produced American quarterbacks, including the likes of John Elway, Steve Spurrier, Bill O'Brien and Bill Walsh. BYU would win not only its first conference championship in 1961 and 1962, but also two national championships in 1963 and 1964.
Cougar Stadium was built in 1964 to hold 30,000 spectators, and in 1965 head coach Tommy Hudspeth led the Cougars to their first conference championship with a record of 6-4. Romney and his successor, Eddie Kimball, ushered in a new era in which the team was 65-51-12 from 1928 to 1942.
The Cougars have been hugely successful under Detmer, who played in four of his seven seasons as head coach for the team, reaching four consecutive games. Since 2006, BYU has had three winning seasons and three bowl appearances in the BCS National Championship Game.
The G5 schools with the most revenue and subsidies are the University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University and BYU. BYU athletics has one of the highest student-athlete participation rates in the nation, averaging more than 2,000 students per game and an annual budget of more than $1.5 million.
